Founder, Donors and Partners
The most important donor of the Foundation is OKD, a.s. the only and the largest hard coal mining company in the Czech Republic. The company operates in the southern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin – in the Ostrava-Karviná coal district – where it runs its five hard coal deep mines.
As the largest employer in the Moravian-Silesian Region, OKD feels responsible in particular for the development of the region and the improvement of the living standards of local citizens. The company provides support to cultural events and local sports clubs and invests into the protection of cultural monuments. Via sponsoring and donorship, it assists young people leaving children’s homes or handicapped children. Industrial monuments or reclamation of land affected by mining activities are not left aside either.
In 2007, the company distributed a total of CZK 35 million to those in need. Establishing the OKD Foundation was just a logical step in the company’s long-term policy providing financial support to the development of the Moravian-Silesian Region and improving living conditions there.
In 2008, the company became the largest donor among all private companies in the Czech Republic. Over its lifetime, the OKD Foundation received donations of almost CZK 300 million from OKD. OKD can be proud of ranking second in the 2010 Top Philanthropist Competition. In addition to that, besides ranking second in this competition in 2009, the company has also obtained a special award in the «Climber of the Year» category.
There is great force in unity. The OKD Foundation therefore cooperates with other organizations in supporting the non-profit-making sector. We would like to thank all our partners for their support!
